The Resurrection
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Dark Pawns was where my friends and I spent our nights. We coordinated on AIM, formed groups, hunted end-game equipment, and spent hours trying not to be brutally murdered by the world around us.
When the server went dark around 2010, that world sat frozen for fifteen years.
My name is Zach. If you were around back then, you might remember me as MisterYuck, Aiko, or Aidan. I ran dp-players.com back in 2004, and rebuilding this server and archive feels like an evolution of that era on steroids.
In April 2026, I stumbled across Frontline's original C source on GitHub. I looked at the files and thought porting it to a clean, modern codebase would take a few easy weeks.
What a dumb assumption.
The original code was built for systems from a different era and would not compile cleanly on anything modern. Rewriting the engine in Go turned into a project of over 110,000 lines of code. To keep the game authentic, every line of the new code runs against the original code, running side-by-side in the background. Every output line, combat formula, and mobile AI routine is tested directly against the old code to make sure the game plays exactly the way it did twenty years ago. The deeper I went, the more challenging the project became, but I refused to give up.
Now the server is running and the codebase is open source on GitHub. After months of work, the website has been rebuilt from scratch in Astro:
- Full searchable help files, class handbooks, and historical documentation
- An interactive 9,000-room world map
- A complete mob and item database generated from the world files
- An in-browser web client with custom CRT terminal rendering
If you played text games twenty years ago and miss a world that does not hold your hand, you can log in right now. It is still a little rough around the edges, but the world is live. And if you build autonomous AI agents, the WebSocket protocol is currently being built so agents can play in the same persistent world alongside humans.
Grab a MUD client, roll a character, and try not to get looted.
